Le Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France assurera à Port-au-Prince la restauration du tableau « Serment des ancêtres », peint en 1822 par Guillaume Guillon Lethière et qui a été retrouvé par les pompiers français dans les ruines du palais présidentiel de la capitale haïtienne.
Un symbole. Le « Serment des ancêtres », peint en 1822 par Guillaume Guillon Lethière, est un tableau hautement symbolique pour les Haïtiens et pour la démocratie. Il fut offert à la jeune République d’Haïti par le peintre né en Guadeloupe d’un père colon (il était Procureur du Roi en Guadeloupe) et d’une mère esclave affranchie. Le « Serment des ancêtres » était depuis lors accroché dans le palais présidentiel. Il représente la rencontre entre le général noir Jean-Jacques Dessalines, lieutenant de Toussaint Louverture, et le chef des mulâtres de Saint- Dominique, Alexandre Pétion. Cette rencontre marqua le début du processus qui mena à l’indépendance d’Haïti, en 1804.
Une œuvre bien connue du Ministère. A la suite du tremblement de terre du 12 janvier 2010 en Haïti, le châssis du « Serment des ancêtres » a été tordu et la toile a subi de grandes déchirures. La restauration reste néanmoins possible. Frédéric Mitterrand a donc décidé le 12 février de la confier au Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France, service spécialisé du Ministère, qui connaît parfaitement cette œuvre pour l’avoir restaurée une première fois dans ses ateliers au Louvre en 1998.

Article 1 – The Purpose of Haïti Action Artistes
In reaction to the earthquake of January 12, 2010, HAITI ACTION ARTISTS is initially interested in collecting art work donated by artists the world over, to be sold during an auction benfitting artists living and working in Haiti.
All proceeds from that auction will be channeled to prominent organisations in Haiti and used to better the living and working conditions of artists as well as support the continued development of art in Haiti.
Article 2 – Participation and Acceptable Art Work
In the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity, HAITI ACTION ARTISTS welcomes all artists world wide to donate a personal work of art for the auction to be held at the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris, France in the beginning of June 2010.
Any and all art work donated must meet the following criteria:
- - Maximal size: 50cm x 65cm
- - Support: All support
- - All forms of art work are acceptable except VOLUME
Article 3 – Sending in Your Art Work
- Artists’s first and last names
- Artist’s contact address (street, city, state, country, zip code)
- Title of the work
- 1 photo A4 format – jpeg format, 300 dpi resolution

Artists who would like to submit their work in person for this auction may do so during normal working hours:
Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
All entries must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2010 in order to be included in the auction catalog.
Article 4 – Reception and Estimated Value of the Works
The Committee for Haitian Artists will ensure reception, registration and storage of all s received by La Maison des Artistes.
Upon reception, the committee will notify the sender with a written receipt acknowledging that his or her has been received.
All will be appraised by a commission of experts as well as auctioneer, Mr. Remi Ader (ADER Company).
Appraised values determined are estimates and thus subject to change. We kindly request that artists provide any additional information that could be instrumental in determining the value of the donated piece.
Artists are welcome to set their own price for donated works. If that price howevers, exceeds the low estimate made by the auctioneer, the work cannot be included in this auction.
Article 5 – The Auction
The auction will be held in early september 2010 in Paris, France.
The exact date and time of the auction will be announced in the near future.
All proceeds from sale of the works will be deposited into the bank account of HAITI ACTION ARTISTS controlled by La Maison des Artistes. These funds will in turn be disbursed to reputable agencies in Haiti and used to improve the the living and working conditions of artists in the country.
Immediately following the sale, the Purchaser agrees to make his or her payment by wire transfer to the account of HAITI ACTION ARTISTS.
Once the auction has been concluded, all purchases become the responsibility of the Purchaser.
No shall be delivered to the Purchaser prior to reception of all monies due.
Article 6 – Unsold s or Entries Received after March 31st
Items not purchased at the auction or entries received after March 31, 2010, depending on the quantity of remaining works, may be contributed for a future auction.
In the event artists prefer not to contribute their for a later auction, La Maison des Artistes agrees to restore all unsold pieces or late entries to their rightful owners as quickly as possible.

Haiti Action is a charity unlike any other measures to benefit victims of Haiti.
Moved by a collective of artists like Federated and the House of Artists, the project was born January 25.2010, on an idea by Elodie Barthelemy (plastic artist), Anne-Elodie Telemaque (lawyer) and Remy Aron (painter and president of La Maison des Artistes). Artists
Haiti Action is collecting and auctioning works by artists from around the world for the benefit of Haitian artists. They have suffered heavy losses in the disaster in January (instead of life, production, work tools) give them the means to rework and create lasting structures.
Haiti Action’s goal is to return to Artists Haitian artists how to work.
This solidarity action of other artists for artists is supported by the actors in the policy and cultural, Bernard Kouchner, Frederic Mitterrand, Abdou Diouf, the French National Commission for unesco, the Committee of Professional Galleries’art and artists of many Professional Associations.
The Ministry of Culture and Communication provides the heart of Paris for an exhibition of three weeks.
Some 700 works will be exhibited to the public from 1 to September 22 within the prestigious site of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, famous for its architectural metal mesh to the Louvre (182 rue Saint Honoré Paris 1) before to be auctioned under the hammer Remi Ader September 23.2010 at the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, 11 rue Berryer 75008 Paris.

June 2010 at the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris, France.
All funds raised from the auction will be used to improve the living conditions of
artists in Haiti and to restore their resources as well as contibute to future artistic
development in the country.
